It will chart the development of grocery retailing from being dominated by small independently owned
shops to the large corporations that control much of the retail landscape today. The catalyst for such
change goes back to the 1960s and 1970s with the abolition of resale price maintenance (RPM),
the rise of self service and the growth of private label brands. It will show how retailers began
to control the supply chain and the rise of Tesco as an international company. The 21st century
has brought new challenges with online grocery, recession, a pandemic and the growth of
German discounters. Finally possible changes for the future will be discussed.
