Guest speaker was Gavin Robertson from the North Fife club.
His subject was Myeloma UK Awareness and as the title implies a blood cancer that little is known about. It is often confused with Melanoma, the skin cancer, when it is a blood cancer similar to leukaemia and lymphoma.
Gavin was speaking from experience as he was diagnosed with Myeloma in 2016 and charted the difficult treatments he received to combat this cancer. He explained that 20% of patients have no symptoms and symptoms are often vague-fatigue, weight loss, bone fractures, recurrent infections.
Myeloma Uk had an awareness week in June to make GPs and the public knowledgeable about the symptoms to improve early diagnosis through blood tests and x-rays. Treatments are similar to other blood cancers- chemotherapy, drugs, stem cell and bone strengthening treatments.
Gavin received numerous questions on a disease that is not well known but accounts for 15% of all blood cancers.
Ranald Barrie gave the vote of thanks for a very informative talk.
