The
Adventures of Reconstructing St Andrews Past was the title of a talk by Dr Alan
Miller from the University of St Andrews’ Computer Science Department.
Having entered into the art of digital and 3d
reconstruction between 2000 and 2006 as part of a team able to recreate a
Spartan basilica, progression came in the decision to recreate St Andrews at
the time of the reformation in 1559.
Dr Miller was able to take members on a
fascinating trip back in time with a virtual tour of the cathedral as it would
have looked pre-Reformation with a walk-through tour which enabled viewers to
see the grandeur of the architecture and the functions of the various areas and
rooms.
Dr Miller also showed virtual tour videos of St
Andrews Castle, Market Street and Holy Trinity Church, all created from the use
of historic documentation, photography, archaeological knowledge and finds.
The amazing technology helps educate people in not
only social history but the importance of St Andrews in Scotland’s history.
Dr Miller also spoke about his department’s work
with Madras College pupils. He
finished his superbly illustrated talk by showing the club a couple of future
projects his team are working on.
A vote of thanks was given by Marilyn Rowan Rhind.
*The Kilrymont Club held an excellent virtual comedy night which raised £1200 for CHAS - Children's Hospices Across Scotland. The evening was organised by Kilrymont Member, James Yule.
