The Rotary Young Writer competition is one of a number of youth competitions organised by RGB&I annually. Divided into three age categories, Junior, Intermediate and Senior, entrants were challenged to write up to 550 words of prose or 40 lines of poetry on a defined theme, this year “Rebuilding”.
The competition is in three stages …Club, District and National, with only the winners in the first two stages progressing to the next stage ….. so to reach the District and National Finals in a great achievement!
In the Gryffe Valley competition six schools participated, some setting the task to entire year groups and others seeking entries in extra-curricular activities. It is hard to be precise, but we reckon a few hundred pupils took part in the initial stages. To keep the judging task manageable, schools were asked to select up to six entries in each age category for scrutiny by our team of judges. The judges selected the best entries in each age group in each school, with prizes awarded to them. The best entries overall in each age group were then eligible for entry to the South of Scotland (District 1320) Final. They were: ……
Senior Jennifer G Gryffe High School
Intermediate Lawrie M St Columba’s School
Junior Hajira A Bridge of Weir Primary School
At the District stage, we were delighted that all our entries were recognised with Jennifer and Lawrie as winners of their sections and therefore chosen to represent the District in the National Final, while Hajira was the runner-up in the Juniors.
Nineteen of the RGB&I Districts submitted their top pieces for the National Finals. Jennifer and Lawrie are to be commended for reaching that stage, and we were delighted by the news that Jennifer’s work was selected as the National Runner-up - well done Jennifer!
