YOUTH SERVICES - Youth Speaks 2023-4

Each team comprised a chair-person and two speakers, one making a proposal and the other putting the opposite point of view. Each team had 15 minutes to make their presentation, with penalties for over-running or under-running that limit. In addition each team had to deal with an unrehearsed question from a pre-arranged member of the audience ….. not an easy task.

Intermediates 

The winning team was The Descending Order, chaired by Finlay L and featuring Oliver J and Lily L debating the banning of XL Bully Dogs.

The runners-up were The Fashionistas, Emily B, Eliza T and Nina G arguing for and against Fast Fashion.

Seniors

Winners were the experienced team formed last year, New Times not Roman. Lucia G, Emma V and Orla O, put on a very well presented performance suggesting Reality TV is harmful. 

Placed second were AMITCH, Ruaridh L, Wesley W and Arun M, who debated the place of revenge in the formal justice system. 

The judging team comprised three members of the Renfrewshire Speakers Club, chaired by Peter Stewart who expressed their admiration for the performances of all the teams. They were particularly impressed by New Times not Roman, doubting if their own members could match that performance. So, well done to all the competitors and particularly to the prize-winners. 

The top team in each age group progresses to the next round in District 1320, Scotland South and could work their way to the RGB & I National Final in April. Good luck!
