Tom confessed that his 39 year career in local government had been something of an accident - apparently he had fancied being an artist! Upcoming marriage, and the prospect of a pay rise, focused his mind on accountancy exams and his success (1st in Scotland and second in UK) put him in the spotlight. His philosophy was that, if you're in the spotlight - keeping dancing, and this approach somehow guided him up the greasy pole of local government in the West of Scotland, until he peaked as CEO of Renfrewshire Council. Now that he's retired he is finally taking up watercolour painting and is learning to play the bagpipes!
