Piping the Marches at Burntisland

PIPING HOT IN BURNTISLAND

Burntisland continued its tradition of "Piping the Marches" on Sunday when a grand turnout of 43 townsfolk and visitors were led around town outskirts by local pipers.

In fitting finale to an excellent Civic Week, the piper-led parade made its way in bright sunshine through crowded fairground and Links, and by promenade to Lochies Pier for wonderful cross-Forth views. By Kirkbank and Greenmount, the group crossed East Toll Park beneath the Binn's craggy summit and took Archers Field and Shipyard Park to Kirkton. Tarmac track by Islandbridge's developing water-feature led on to Red Pond, and Abbot's View and Melville Gardens wound up to Rossend Castle. Step-descent to Sailors Walk and Harbour Place brought the walkers to East Dock and by Victoria and Albert Cottages and Beacon Centre for return to the Links and Civic Week Marquee.

The stirring if surprising sounds of the pipes were very well appreciated by picnickers and bathers on the beach, Sunday strollers on East Toll Park, shoppers in the High Street and afternoon walkers around East Dock. With great enjoyment for those participating and for those within earshot, which would be most of the town, "Piping the Marches" is now firmly fixed as finale to Burntisland's Civic Week.

Bill Davidson of Burntisland and Kinghorn Rotary Club thanked all participants, particularly pipers Walter Anderson and Kenny Reid, whose rousing repertoire inspired the walkers and clearly entertained many townsfolk who applauded the passing parade. Bill welcomed all to join in again at the end of June next year.
