Great Houghton Parish Council and the Village Hall Committee would like to thank Stainborough Rotary Club for their time, effort and commitment on a voluntary basis to help clear and prepare the land to help extend the Let's Grow project plot.
The work done over three days by the club included clearing everything from PVC doors/windows, a bath and all sorts of materials that should not be on the allotment into a skip, (and yes there was a supermarket trolley,) plus laying a concrete path and hard standing to assist wheel chair users
There efforts were very much appreciated as the scheme is dependent on volunteers and for them to do this should be recognised, by everyone in the local community and the borough.
The allotment which it is hoped will become a community garden, will be part of the Lets Grow's Project, started last year by the Village Hall committee and supported by the Parish Council, North East Ward Alliance, and Barnsley Area Council. It is targeted at the local community by providing them with the opportunity to develop a garden/allotment where they can grow flowers and vegetables.
Community Places (House John Street) a residential and day care facility for the disabled are involved in the project as are Sandhill Primary School.
Tuition and guidance on horticultural things is provided one day a week (Tuesdays) by Twiggs Ltd.
Funds for the work and project overall have been obtained by grants submitted by the Local Youth group, and Village Hall Committee, from Greggs (Environment Fund) Ren-New, South Yorkshire Community Foundation as well as donations from the Parish and Local councils.
