Missions accomplished by land and sea

Members' interest is not solely on their completing the tasks but recognising and being able to communicate what has been learned along the way as well as how the experience will help in the future.

As Hannah and Conner recounted their adventures at Hebden Hey on the Rotary Youth Leadership Award course, evident benefits gained included the opportunity to plan with and then lead teams bringing a vast increase in confidence. The difference between the nervous individuals dropped off amongst 30 other young people feeling the same way and those giving a presentation to 50 adults full of questions four months later was plain to see. These facts were underlined and confirmed by their mentor who was on hand throughout the week.

In today's age of instant communication their group will keep each other well informed.

For Tom and Chris in the cramped conditions on board 'Ocean Scout' covering more than 130 miles with the Ocean Youth Trust (North) technical sailing skills had to be learned as the different daily (and nightly) voyages took place. At sea team leader became skipper and watch leader. Highlights included close encounters with dolphins and an ocean going tanker as well as the chance to emulate Lord Nelson with the command to 'Raise the mizzenmast!' or was it 'sail'? As part of a small crew humour (and nicknames) were an absolute necessity as their presentation illustrated in spades.

President Elect Barry Mills gave a splendid vote of thanks congratulating the spirited foursome and confirming there will be little problem in selling a 'same again next year' message to Club members. Keeping in touch with the group will also be on his agenda.
