Supporting needs from Venezuelan Earthquake

A child directly affected by the collapse of structures during the earthquake in June 2026.

Joyler suffered injuries of such severity that a bilateral lower-limb amputation became the only viable medical intervention to save his life

Among those who were victims of the devastating earthquake was Joyler Escobar, a child directly affected by the collapse of structures during the earthquake in June 2026.  Joyler suffered injuries of such severity that a bilateral lower-limb amputation became the only viable medical intervention to save his life.

After assessing the profound impact that the loss of both legs would have on his mobility,

independence, and overall quality of life, as well as the extreme vulnerability resulting from

his condition, the International Service Committee of the Rotaract Dr. Pablo Puky Club

decided to support his case through the funding and international solidarity provided by Mercia and Marches Rotary Club.

The assistance provided through this donation consisted, firstly, of the delivery of an

adapted shower chair to facilitate personal hygiene and daily care. Secondly, support was

provided through the donation of a commode chair to meet essential daily living needs,

together with the provision of basic food assistance.   A full and detailed account of the use of the funds was kindly provided by The Rotaract Club of DR Pablo Puky in Venezuela

Mercia and Marches Rotary were able to provide funding from member resources, which was used to support Joyler Escobar in his hour of need.  Club member Dr Elliott Lancaster had got in touch with María José Pacheco Osorio, International Service Director Rotaract who he had met through an online event. Since then, they have stayed in touch and supported Rotary/Rotaract initiatives.
