Every October, we celebrate World Porridge Day to support Mary's Meals - a charity set up to help feed children in some of the world's poorest countries. School feeding projects provide a simple but nutritious meal once a day, which also encourages the children to come to school (and hence gain an education).
Since its inception in 2002, Mary's Meals has fed over 600,000 children - mostly in Malawi and sub-Saharan Africa, but also across the world - from Haiti and Ecuador to Thailand and the Philippines.
In recent years, we have also participated in a number of meal packing events, organised by Rise Against Hunger. Rotarians and supporters from across the district have gathered to fill packs of nutritious dried meals consisting of a mixture of rice, soy, lentils and essential minerals and vitamins - which are then shipped to where they are needed most. Working together, we have typically been able to prepare some 50-60,000 meals in a single day.
