Blind Bolwers

An annual bowling competition with members of Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind

“Blind Bowlers”

This year’s contest with the Blind Bowlers nearly did not happen! Monday the 4th of August turned out to be very wet, as Storm Floris swept across the land. Fortunately Nigel, the Abbeydale Bowls Captain offered the Rotary Club the following Monday the 11th for our annual thrashing/match.
It turned out to be a brilliant day. The Blind Bowlers turned up just in time in their minibus with a crack team . A small but valiant band of Rotarians greeted them. Two dedicated photographers took team photos throughout.
The protagonists lined up on the green and each side split into teams of two to play against each other. Four individual matches were played, but that left some people without a game. So a fifth team was formed by some of the Blind Bowlers swapping sides !
It was a hard fought event. No Quarter was given. Cheers were heard at several intervals during the event. Drinks were needed to fortify the Bowlers. It was all over by noon and both sides repaired to the Sports Club for a buffet lunch. The match was drawn. This makes a change from losing which is the normal outcome.! More creative scoring is needed next year. A very good time was had by all.

My thanks to Nigel , Bowls Captain , for letting us use his green free of charge.
Participants from Rotary were , Paul Goodlad, Phil Heywood, Chris Jones, Goura Kudesia, Alex Ritchie, Graham Taylor, Keith Tomlinson, Trevor Ward and John Rogerson
