Mike Jackson's Open Garden
Every year, Rotarian Mike Jackson opens his garden to the public.
WHAT A LOVELY DAY
Back in 1967 Mike Jackson and his late wife Norma moved into a lovely house in
Newfield Crescent, Dore and straight way decided that they would develop the large
garden into something special and this they did. Their garden is without doubt great
credit to them for all their hard work.
Over time, more and more people were aware of the development and around 40
years ago a decision was made to formally invite people to visit their garden and
whilst not making any entry charges they would encourage visitors to make a
donation for charity. In the year 2000 the garden was approved by the National
Garden Society, with an entry in its national directory for many years.
Over time assistance was forthcoming from organisations like Rotary Inner Wheel to
provide refreshments and suddenly Mike Jackson’ s Open Garden became a regular
event not just in and around Dore but in many surrounding areas.
This year Mike chose the Sheffield Visually Impaired Walking Group as his
beneficiary, it being the Silver Jubilee of a group he joined in 2000 at its inception
and acted as a guide and walker for 19 years.
On Saturday 31st May the sun shone brightly and the garden ,as usual, looked
magnificent. For over three hours many visitors came to Newfield Crescent and
greatly admired the fine display. Volunteer ladies from SVIWG handed out
afternoon teas.
At the end of the day £600 was raised for the worthy cause and whilst Rotary
President , Mike Waters, thanked Mike for all his efforts it was Mike who had the
final say. Whilst he thanked SVIWG, Abbeydale Rotarians, neighbours and friends
for their support, he made special mention of his own family who have given him
great support since the sad loss of his wife, Norma.
We are all now looking forward to the Open Garden Day in 2026.
