SEADIP - South Essex Area Defibrillator Installment Project

Around the world more than 7 million people suffer from sudden cardiac arrest every year, only 5-10% survive. The 4 minutes following a sudden cardiac arrest are critical. The average response time for ambulances in urban areas is 11 minutes. Only 3% of cardiac arrests currently happen within the recommended retrieval distance of a defibrillator. Southend attracts in excess of 6 million visitors each year and whilst there are likely to be some defibrillators in commercial premises, there is not a public record of these; however, there are none with 24/7 public access currently located along the foreshore with the exception of the defibrillator provided by Leigh Rotary in conjunction with Southend Redcaps at Chalkwell.

In order to meet the recommended response times, it is estimated a further 9 defibrillators are needed on the foreshore between Chalkwell and Shoebury Beach. This is a perfect community project to be undertaken by Leigh and Thorpe Bay Rotary in conjunction with the Carli Lansley Foundation.
