THE magnificent spirit behind the annual Tour de Furness bike ride
was highlighted by a last-minute cash boost of almost £4,000.
It crowned
a successful presentation evening by The Rotary Club of Furness who
have organised the flagship charity event for the last 24 years.
The
17-strong Spirit Energy team, having won the Bill Bartlett Cup by
raising over £4,500, promptly announced further match funding to the
tune of £3,800.
Rotary Club President Brian Boyd said the fantastic gesture took the amount raised from the 2019 event to over £27,000.
He
praised a real team effort with some 260 riders on the day - including
two tandem teams from Barrow Blind Society - and the backing of 22
corporate sponsors, including main sponsor Poole Townsend.
Brian
said this year's 25th anniversary Tour de Furness on September 6th
could see the running total top the 1/2 million mark. A far cry from
1996 when the late Bill Bartlett instigated the first event and raised
what was deemed the successful sum of £236!
The meeting heard
that the Rotary Club organising committee, headed by Dave Salt, had
taken on board feedback from riders and would be modifying and improving
routes for this year.
St Mary's Hospice will continue to be
the main beneficiary of the event and their Area Fund-raiser Clare
Paling brought good news to the meeting at Barrow Golf club.
She
said they would be re-opening beds at the inpatient unit in April with
new and existing doctors backed by pioneering online consultancy, only
the second such scheme in the country.
The main awards were: Team winners, Spirit Energy; 2nd, Barrow Rotary Wheelers; 3rd, Deltawaite.
Senior
