National Coastwatch watchkeepers provide “eyes and ears” along the coast, keeping watch and monitoring radio channels to provide a listening watch in poor visibility. When people find themselves in trouble they are there to alert HM Coastguard and direct the appropriate emergency and rescue services to the casualty.
Today, more than 60 stations staffed by over 2,700 highly trained volunteers keep a visual watch around the coastline. One such station is NCI Lyme Bay, situated at Beach Road, Burton Bradstock.
On Wednesday, October 23rd, we were fortunate to welcome Judy Clarke and Pete Dennis to our club meeting. They enlightened us on the practicalities of providing this much-needed service.
