A Memorable Day 14th August 2024

On the now annual Burnaid day we gave young burns victims, their families and carers a day to remember

Lucy Field is a Corporate member of Bewdley Rotary representing AJF Electrical Ltd., a Bewdley based company, and attended the Burnaid Day for the first time. Here are her thoughts.

My first volunteering event since joining the Bewdley Rotary as a Corporate member was the memorable Burnaid Fun Day. It was loved by 64 child burn victims, their families and carers in Stourport.

This is 17th time that Syd Handy has organised this event. He was ably assisted by Cliff Brewer, a past member of Stouport Rotary Club and by current Bewdley Rotary members.

In attendance during the day were the Mayor of Stourport, Cllr. John Thomas; District Governor, Denzil Williams, and Bill and Margaret Elliot representing the District Community Service team.

Burnaid is a local charity which helps child burn survivors, receiving treatment at Birmingham’s Children's Hospital and provides support to their families.

The day started at Stourport Playland with the children and carers finding amusement from the variety of rides and games, following on with a river trip courtesy of The River King seeing the local wildlife. A delicious lunch was further provided for all at The Port House after which we all ventured to Treasure Island where the children tried to go on as many thrill seeking rides as possible. We ended the day back at the Stourport Playland for more rides, games and ice creams.

A big thank you must go to the Danter family of Treasure Island, John and Margret Ready of Stourport Playland, Tom and Jamie of The River King as well as The Port House for a fabulous lunch. The event is funded by donations from many sources and thanks go to the Rotary Five District Trust for their generous donation.

The children commented on how much fun they’d had throughout the day with their families. The smiles on their faces were a tell tale sign! The carers enjoyed their day out too with a helping hand from Bewdley Rotary.

I had a thoroughly good time with the children, families, carers and the Rotary members, I’m looking forward to the 2025 fun day already!
