BurnAid Day Out

A day to remember for families with children who have suffered burns


Stourport and Bewdley Rotary Clubs joined together in August to host a day out for families with children who have suffered burns. The families are chosen by BurnAid, a small local charity that aims to support burn survivors and their families at the Burn Centres at Birmingham Children's Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, the only two centres for the West Midlands region, including the Wyre Forest area.

The day started after the coach which had picked the children and their families arrived at Stourport on Severn. The first stop was the Playland café where ice creams, cakes and drinks were enjoyed before everybody made their way to the wharf to board the 'River King' for a cruise down the Severn. Russ Stokes, the children's entertainer, delighted all with his magic and balloon creations during the trip. On return to the wharf it was on to The Port House for a very hearty lunch following which it was then to the Treasure Island Funfair where the children could have as many rides as they wished. At 3.30pm it was back to Playland for more ice cream and an opportunity for some of the younger children to enjoy themselves on the rides there.

Stourport Rotary's, Syd Handy, has been arranging this event for 15 years and said "It had always been a great pleasure to organise and host the children and families from the Burns unit of the Birmingham Children's Hospital. They come as strangers but go home at the end of the day as one big happy family and having made many friends. The day out helps these traumatised children with their social reintegration, self-esteem and confidence but most of all they, their siblings and parents have a lot of fun."

Of course these sort of events never happen without a lot of goodwill from many people. Thanks go to Playland, Riverside Cruises, Treasure Island, The Port House, Colin Hill our official photographer and all the sponsors for their generosity. Thanks also to the Rotarians from Bewdley Rotary and Stourport Rotary, but above all to Syd Handy, ably assisted on the day by Cliff Brewer, who enabled the young burn survivors and their families to have a day to remember.
