Community Service

Doing what we exist for - Serving the Community.

Community service is at the heart of what we do in the Rotary Club of Skipton Craven

Our service to the local community can involve us in assisting other charities with their own activities, including street or supermarket collections, and generally supporting other community activities in the local area.

We stand ready to support any local community projects provided they are reasonable and are not beyond the capabilities of our members.

Our popular Step into Spring/Summer Tea Parties, hosted by Club Members and their partners, provide opportunities for those who, for whatever reason, do not often get out to socialise with others, to enjoy an afternoon of good food, entertainment, a game or two of bingo and a prize raffle!

Community fundraising is a major activity, whether it be through our annual Santa Fun Run when, for one Sunday morning in November, the streets of Skipton turn red with around 2000 men, women and children running the 5 km course in support of our Club charities or of charities of their choice;

Or, our supermarket collections in Skipton’s Tesco and Morrisons supermarkets on four Saturdays and Sundays in December, again in support of the Club’s nominated charities (primarily local but also in support of specific national and international disaster relief activities) – and for the children, a first sighting of Santa!

But, the highlight of our fundraising year is our Christmas street collections over 11 evenings immediately before Christmas, when Santa and his sleigh and a host of ‘helpers’ take to the streets of Skipton and surrounding villages, to raise money for our nominated charities.

It is an event that brings so much joy to the young children as we accompany Santa and his sleigh walking the streets with our collecting boxes.  The tremendous amount of money that we collect over the 11 evenings truly reflects the generosity of the people of Skipton and surrounding villages.

And, we have the Friday Fellowship Group which meets on a Friday throughout The Spring and Summer to carry out garden maintenance in churchyards and Ings School (SELFA) after which they gather at a local hostelry for a well-deserved pie and a pint!

Throughout the year, we support a variety of local charities with donations from our Charity Fund normally of between £250 and £1000; larger amounts may be pledged through the President’s preferred charities.
