Rotarian Steve Gilligan with a talk entitled 1.4 billion reasons - The Global Poverty Project
Ormskirk landlord Steve Gilligan has been honoured after being selected to represent the Global Poverty Project (GPP) as an Ambassador in a groundbreaking outreach initiative to bring awareness to the town of the need to end extreme poverty.
Steve, from the Queen Inn, is one of 100 Ambassadors taking part in a year-long programme, which began with a two-day training session in London, where they were trained by several leading campaigners including Martin Kirk from Oxfam.
Steve gave an illuminating and positive talk highlighting the great progress that has been made in many areas to eradicate extreme poverty in countries such as India, Ghana, Botswana and Nicaragua and the challenges that lay ahead. In fact since the campaign began .2 Billion people have been taken out of extreme poverty and the number of people living on less than $1.25 per day is now below 1.2 billion - still a major challenge.
Small changes in our lifestyle can make a big difference to people struggling with extreme poverty from thinking about the aid we give to make it as effective as possible, to searching out fair trade products that helps farmers in developing countries.
