Last week we wer honoured to have Christine talk to us about how her Father survived The Death Railway.
130.000 soldiers were taken prisoner by the Japanese and made to work/ slaves building the Railway.. They survived by combatting diseass, Malaria, Dissentry,Beri Beri, Chloera and ulcers.
What they had was very basic and homemade including their instruments. The Japanese having kept the Red Cross parcels to themselves.
Clenliness during surgeries and treatment was essential to survival. They stillmanaged to scrub operating tablle.boiled gowns were worn, docs scrubbed up. They took place in the afternoons for good lihjting and under draped mosquito nets,
No medical care was given by the Japanese at all, 20% of prisoners died. Survival due to resourceful soldiers and has all our admiration.
Christines father survived, and suffered Malaria 3 times. He told the tale of beating adversary, so that it never happens again.
