Dr. Roger M Broadley

It is with great sadness that we record the death of Past President Roger Broadley who passed away on Sunday 5 January 2025 at the age of 81 years.

Roger was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, where he attended Heath Grammar School before entering Liverpool Medical School in 1961. It was at Liverpool University that he met his future wife Hilary, then a history student. On completion of his medical studies Roger and Hilary moved in the late 1960’s to join a General Medical Practice in Stone, Staffordshire. It was here that Roger joined Stone Round Table.

In 1975 the Broadley family moved when Roger became a GP partner in Thornton. During the next twenty-seven years Roger served the local community as a conscientious, caring and well respected doctor. In his spare time he continued serving the community as an active member of Thornton Cleveleys Round table, as a medical instructor with the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and with the Rotary Club of North Fylde. 

On retiring in 2002, Roger continued his commitment to the community in becoming a Justice of the Peace and as a Governor at Millfield High School and Manor Beach Primary School. He and Hilary were active members of the congregation at Poulton Methodist Church.

Roger was President of the Rotary Club of North Fylde in 2010 and always contributed as an active member of the club until he suffered an unfortunate stroke whilst on holiday in Lanzarote in late 2017. Prior to this he had been a keen walker along with an interest in railways and travel. Declining health resulted in admission to a nursing home in 2023 but this did not diminish his interest in the club or the local community. Roger epitomised the Rotary spirit of ‘Service above Self’.

Roger leaves his wife Hilary, their children; Corinne, Martin and also Rachel, who followed him into the medical profession, and their four grandchildren.
