Joseph Max Romer 1934 – 2021
I feel it is an honour to be asked to write some of my thoughts about Max. Our relationship began in 1975 when I replied to an advert in the British Medical Journal stating that a Practice in Thornton-Cleveleys was looking for a replacement partner. My first encounter with Max, along with John Bedell, gave me an insight into their enthusiasm and professionalism regarding the philosophy and practicalities of General Practice. His foresight about the future of general practice for the late Twentieth Century resulted in sharing Thornton Medical Centre with the late Dr David Glover and partners and the late Dr Archie Muir, with the distinction of being the first Health/Medical Centre in Lancashire. Night calls and house visits, weekends on call and evening meetings were all part of a very busy life, the legacy of which had a great influence on life in Thornton. As a traditional GP he was a friend and confidante of many who passed through his care. Even after retirement he continued for several years as a clinical assistant in psychiatry at Adelphi House in Blackpool. Max was always involved in community projects and through membership and service in Round Table eased my transition from Stone’s Round Table in Staffordshire. His close ties with and work within the Catholic Church led to him becoming a Governor at Cardinal Allen High School. Continuing his work in Round Table after the then retirement age of 40 Max became Founder President of the newly-formed North Fylde Rotary Club and repeated this role after 25 years for the Silver Anniversary. There was still time for relaxation at Fleetwood Golf Club, where he served as Captain. Probably the most important aspect of a very busy life well-lived was Max’s family. Maureen, his children and grandchildren all benefitted from and shared in his love of walking and the countryside, family activities and holidays and extended family gatherings. I feel privileged to have known him and to have benefitted so much from his medical expertise and valuable friendship. I will miss him, as will we all. Roger B.
