Andrew and Gill Campbell founded Hearing Ambassadors in 2017 after a chance meeting with Rotary Past District Governor Cheryle Berry. Andrew is a retired engineer and Gill worked in IT. They are also members of Hope Valley Rotary Club. They tell me that without the support and encouragement of Rotary District 1220, Hearing Ambassadors would not have achieved so much in such a short time. Their aim is to ensure that no one is inadvertently excluded from meetings due to their hearing difficulty. Their message is applicable to everyone, regardless of hearing ability.
They spoke about raising hearing loss awareness and explaining what difficulties people experience when living with hearing loss. This can include trouble socialising, leading to increased isolation, which in turn can result in anxiety and depression. There are around 70 million people in the UK and around 10 million (15%) have some form of hearing loss. According to Public Health England this is expected to rise to 15 million by 2035. They emphasised should you think your hearing has deteriorated, please do consider a simple hearing test as the first course of action. Shockingly, the average time for people to start to seek help is 5-7 years.
With the aid of slides and a video Andrew & Gill then explained what we could do to help ourselves when holding meetings. We should consider the facilities that are available. Take a look at the video on the HOME page of our web site and make sure that the room is set up so that everyone gets a good view. Make sure any technology that is available to you (e.g. Induction Loop or Sound System) is working as it should.
Thank you Andrew and Gill for a very interesting and informative talk. I encourage everyone to visit the Hearing Ambassadors web site which provides a wealth of hearing loss information.
