The best selling author talks to the club about Jane Austen

Hungerford Rotary Club Welcomes Gill Hornby

Members of Hungerford Rotary Club and their many guests were treated to a fascinating address by author Gill Hornby after supper at their speaker meeting on 17th January.  The internationally best-selling author was introduced by the Club’s President Nick Wedgwood with, ‘Much pride and certainly no prejudice’, and she subsequently delighted her audience with a wide-ranging talk centred on the life and times of Jane Austen in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

After the success of her first two books, (The Hive published in the UK in 2013 and All Together Now in 2015), Ms Hornby moved to historical fiction with Miss Austen in 2020.  Once a journalist, Ms Hornby’s talk at the Rotary Club demonstrated the level of detail and the depth of research that an author in this genre must achieve before a book can be brought together, as she painted a verbal picture of the many stresses and strains of life that a family faced in a rural English community during Regency times.

Ms Hornby concluded her visit to the Club by kindly signing a number of copies of her best-known books.
