On 15th September, Hungerford Rotary Club welcomes Professor Andrew
Holmes to the Club.
His talk, A Physicist’s Life, explains that a physicist doesn’t
spend his career dressed in a white coat bent over a microscope in a
laboratory.
Rather he has to go out into the World looking for or creating
projects and working with other organisations to carry out the
mission. Some of the work involves deep thought at the edges of
physics knowledge, some involves complex engineering - usually both
at the same time.
His talk will look at these aspects spread out over a sixty-year
career.
Professor Holmes has a distinguished academic background and a
career including over two decades spent at the UK Atomic Energy
Authority (Culham Lab), specialising in plasma heating and ion beam
research for thermonuclear fusion.
