What is a Repair Café?
Toaster stopped toasting? Holes in your worn-out pockets?
Table lamps leaving you in darkness?
According to the International Repair Café foundation, “We throw away vast amounts of stuff. Even
things with almost nothing wrong, and which could get a new lease on life after
a simple repair. The trouble is, lots of people have forgotten that they can
repair things”.
The next time you are thinking that something needs to be
replaced, think about how you can make your stuff last a bit longer, save the
money in your (mended) pocket and reduce the amount of waste you are putting
into landfill.
Toasters, worn clothing and table lamps are among the
most common problems that are brought to us at Hungerford Repair Café. Our
volunteers, pictured here, give their time and experience freely to help
everyone who comes to one of our events to give new life to something worn out
or broken. Last Saturday we helped repair 3 toasters, mended a few pockets and a lamp,
not to mention a toy robot, an electric hole punch and a hedge trimmer. The
gentleman who brought in the toy robot said “Brilliant fix of [my] daughter’s toy. Fantastic service and so good for
environment and community”. In two and a half hours, we helped fix around
22 items and gave advice on how to fix another 9 items. But importantly, we met
some new people, shared our skills with the community and helped keep some
things out of landfill.
Why don’t you come along and see for yourself? Our next
Repair Café morning is on Saturday September 16th at the Croft Hall
in Hungerford from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. Drop in for a cuppa and cake and a
friendly chat about repairing your stuff.
