Wonderful hospitality from our twin club in Belgium.
A party of 17 Rotarians and partners joined their twin club in Belgium to celebrate the club’s 25 Anniversary. On Friday evening representatives from the Belgium club joined the Hungerford travelers for an Italian evening at a restaurant near their hotel. Lots of good food and wine was enjoyed as old acquaintances were renewed and new friendships formed. The evening continued back at the hotel with a night cap and coffee when both French and English was practiced showing that different languages are no barrier to sociable conversation. The Hungerford party were collected the next morning and taken for a tour of a coal mine near Charleroi where over 200 miners lost their lives in 1956, after an underground explosion. The area around the mine also had a number of museums and galleries and after an excellent lunch the visitors were able to see exhibitions of printing presses, heavy machinery and decorative glass. The main event of the day was the anniversary dinner which took place at the hotel. The two clubs were joined by a delegation from the Belgium’s other twin club in France and it was much appreciated by our continental friends that President Bruce gave his address in French (With a little help and tuition from Joy Gilbert). It was an excellent evening with lots of good food, fine wines and interesting company. We thank you, Fontaine-L’Eveque, for your wonderful hospitality and look forward to hosting your next visit to England.
