Hungerford Repair Café – 16th May 2026
If the queues are anything to go by, the popularity of the Hungerford Repair Café has not dimmed. Last Saturday we welcomed almost 50 visitors through our doors with a broad range of items in need of repair. People come to us when they have simple (and sometimes not-so-simple) household repairs for which there is no established commercial repair service. Repair Cafés are filling a much-needed vacuum (pardon the pun) in the modern world as there are few commercial ventures willing to undertake everyday maintenance on our treasured and useful belongings.Alongside vacuum cleaners, radios, jewellery, a record player, various table lamps and numerous items of worn clothing we were presented with a 1950’s walkie-talkie doll. The doll is a work in progress; suffice it to say that the doll’s head is once again resting on its shoulders. We hope to have it walking and talking by the end of our next repair event in July (see below).
If you have young children, you may have heard of the Unicorn Operation game. The game is a magical, whimsical twist on the classic Operation board game. Players use a pair of tweezers to carefully extract fun, colorful items or charms from a shaking unicorn game board without triggering a buzzing sound. Volunteer Ken had to “operate” on the game itself which had stopped working. On leaving with her now working board game, the young owner was asked how she felt about the service. “Happy” was her response – which is everything we hope for!
Some of our repairs require multiple skills – which is where a Repair Café can shine. One lady brought in a fabric covered coat hanger which required some mechanical strengthening by two of our “general repairs” volunteers, and some stitching by a seamstress loaned to us by Newbury and Thatcham Repair Café.
