What does RYLA offer? - (Rotary Young Leaders Award)

RYLA programmes run between three to ten days and give participants the opportunity to:

• Gain exposure to leadership scenarios
• Explore problem-solving strategies as part of a team
• Discuss and apply creative approaches to leadership and conflict management
• Build confidence in yourself and what you can achieve
• Meet new people and make lasting friendships
• Learn how to arrange youth activities and community service projects at locally and internationally

Being a leader is not just about being confident enough to speak out and knowing what to say, it is knowing when to listen to others and understand. RYLA teaches this, and other soft skills, to help everyone to be the best they can be.

Teamwork exercises bring people together from different walks of life in a safe environment where everyone can get to know each other without fear of exclusion or negativity.

As with all Rotary programmes, Rotary members are appropriately DBS checked and risk assessments are carried out for all activities.

In District 1070, through the Rotary Youth Exchange Programme  (known as RYE), we offer young people, between 15-25 years of age, a range of opportunities for life experiences in over 100 other countries across the world. We also offer NGSEs to 19-28 year-olds vocational experience and volunteering opportunities.To be take part you need to apply, be normally resident in our District, have your parents’ support, pass an interview at home with your parents present and if accepted you will be sponsored by a Rotary Club close to your home.

What are the benefits?

• Build lasting friendships with young people from around the world

How long do exchanges last?

Long-term exchanges last a full academic year, and students attend local schools and live with multiple host families.

Short-term exchanges last from several days to three months and are often structured as camps, tours, or homestays that take place when school is not in session.

What are the costs?

Room and board are provided, as well as any school fees. Each program varies, but students are usually responsible for:

• Round-trip airfare
• Travel insurance
• Travel documents (such as passports and visas)
• Spending money and any additional travel or tours

There are also Rotary Clubs for Young People.

RotaKids is a fun and exciting way for children aged 7-12 to make friends and get involved with important activities in the community, all while having a great time in the process.

Interact is a fun and lively organisation offering young people aged 12-18 amazing opportunities to broaden their horizons, make new friends and help the lives of others.  Interact clubs are based in schools and colleges.

And for Primary children, we have the Rotary Star, which is an opportunity to recognise and reward children for acts of good citizenship.  It could be a fundraising initiative;  general enthusiasm and good efforts in school;  looking after and caring for school animals;  looking after granny and helping with her shopping;  or simply brightening up everybody's day with their smile. Whereas the majority of Rotary Youth Service projects / competitions cater predominantly for gifted and talented children, the ‘Rotary Stars’ project is open and suitable for all children irrespective of age, talent or academic ability. It is all down to personal achievement with no competition element.
