RETURN OF THE YOUTH DEBATE COMPETITION

A WONDERFUL EVENING

After a delay of three years it was a pleasure for our Rotary members to assist in the organising of the first round of the National Youth Debate competition held at the Beacon School in Banstead.

Each team consists of a chairperson, a speaker for the motion and another against the motion. The youngsters, representing various schools in the Sutton area, were extremely confident and presented well in front of an appreciative audience. After a difficult decision the judges chose Wilsons School for the Intermediate and Senior sections of the competition.

The photo shows the Wilson Senior team receiving their certificates and prizes from Nonsuch Rotary president Chris Hughes. Public speaking is such an asset and we were so impressed by all the young people taking part.

The good news is that this team was successful in the London and South East England Regional Final of the National competition held at Surrey University. Ian Cotton (right) won the award for best individual speaker and the Wilsons Team came second overall - a magnificient achievement.
