President Phil Scrancher presents our 'Rotary Ride' cheque for £2,161 to Becky Trout, the local fundraising manager for Cancer Research UK. Also in the picture is Imogen Fenner of Progress Performance who very generously provided the facilities and equipment for the 24-hour event to take place.
On Father's Day weekend 2019 (15/16 June) Rotary clubs around the country held bike rides to raise thousands of pounds for their chosen prostate charities. These charities offer tremendous support for those affected by the cancer, whether patients, relatives or friends. As part of this national event, the Yeo Vale Rotary Club held a 24-hour static ride at Progress Performance in Yeovil, in aid of Cancer Research UK (CRUK).
In the UK, about 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives and it is estimated over 11,000 men die from it every year. That amounts to one man every 45 minutes. The survival rate is improving but early diagnosis is still necessary and can often lead to more successful care. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, but more than 8 in 10 of patients now survive for 10 years or more.
Our Yeo Vale 24-hour Ride came to a close at 09:00 on 16 June with an impressive total of 1,188 kms (738 miles) on the clock. Thank you so much to all those who supported the ride, with a special mention for the members and training team at Progress Performance. There were wonderful stories of those who had overcome significant setbacks to take part and had raised wonderful amounts in support of the event.
more Message from event organizer Rotarian Nigel Lindsay (on 3rd July). I’ve heard today that the final fundraising figure for the ride is £2,161. This is way above what we hoped for at the outset (and any gift aid is on top). CRUK is delighted.
