Quiz Night at Little Common Community Centre

Sidley Cricket Club are set to achieve their need for a generator at their new cricket ground thanks to a quiz organised by Senlac Rotary Club’s Foundation committee. The quiz, which took place at Little Common Community Centre, Bexhill, on Friday, 6^th October, saw some 75 people racking their memories to find the answers to the questions. The winners were Ladies Going Gaga who came out top in a very close scoring contest; the Hopefuls team took the prize in the separate car logo competition.

Sidley cricket club, founded over 120 years ago, was homeless when it lost its home ground in Sidley in 2013 until it managed to secure a lease on St Mary’s Recreation ground in Bexhill last year. Since then the club has been committed to raising money to set out pitches and provide the facilities to service the ground; at present, they have very limited  facilities and there is no electricity supply and to connect to a mains supply would be exceedingly expensive. The alternative option is to install a generator which will now be made possible with help from Senlac Rotary. Until the club lost the ground it had been a very successful club within the county with three regular Saturday teams; sadly most of the members left leaving a hardcore of 15 members who played at Sandrock in Hastings. Despite their small numbers they continued to encourage junior players to come along and they have many youngsters aged 6 to 16 who play and are coached for free.

Rotary clubs can apply for a matching District grant through the Rotary Foundation charity to fund small-scale, short-term activities that address needs in communities locally and abroad. Senlac Rotary will apply for a matching grant to double the £750 raised at the quiz evening which will then be donated to Sidley cricket club for use to purchase the generator.
