The meeting on Wednesday 15thAugust was a little larger than normal despite being the holiday season. The club was very pleased to welcome some eleven Rotarians from the St Leonards club, including President Chris Hamson and Immediate Past President Fran Craig, who joined us for the evening. Former Senlac Rotarian Bob Wren, now living in Yorkshire, also joined the meeting.
The after dinner speaker was actor Jonathon Lindsley making a return after his talk on “From Holmfirth to Hollywood” earlier this year. Jonathon’s theme was “Magical Thinking” described by him as the ideas you get by finding causality in coincidences. By thinking about something you will make other things happen, for example, not walking under a ladder you won’t have something fall on you. Thus he spoke about superstitions in the theatre such as not mentioning “That play”, whistling, break a leg and why there is a “Ghost Light”. How and why did these superstitions develop? With his humorous delivery Jonathon entertained us with his thoughts and explanations.
For those who haven’t heard this talk, I am not going to explain further but would suggest you listen to Jonathon yourselves! President Dave Miles thanked Jonathon for his very interesting talk.
St Leonards President, Chris Hamson, thanked Senlac for their hospitality and extended an invite to visit St Leonards in the future. Rounding off the evening a bouquet of flowers was presented to St Leonards Immediate Past President, Fran Craig, whose last function this was with the club before she moves to Suffolk.
