Talking Foundation, a presentation from Denis Spliier
The club was fortunate to have Denis Spiller talking to them last evening, 22 July,
about The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Denis, is a past President of Rotary Great
Britain and Ireland and a past District Governor who has a very in-depth knowledge
of the background and workings of TRF. Denis spoke of the history of TRF, how
money which is donated, much through club, individual Rotarians and bequests, is
invested and used.
TRF is one of the world’s largest and best managed charities; it
focuses world-wide on 7 areas, promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean
water, supporting education, improving maternal and child health, growing local
economies and protecting the environment. TRF also has a major programme of
Polio eradication and since 1985 the instances of wild polio and countries affected
has reduced drastically, with, this year, only two countries affected and about a
dozen cases reported. The Bill Gates Foundation will double the TRF contribution.
Denis also discussed the grants available and the processes for obtaining them.
In his vote of thanks Ray Dixon said the very detailed talk illustrated the workings of
TRF and he, although very knowledgeable himself, had learned new things .He
hoped that members now had a more detailed knowledge of Rotary’s own charity
and urged clubs and members to provide their support.
