Visit to Shepherd Neame Brewery, Faversham

Coach trip to local Brwery

Visit to Shepherd Neame Brewery, Faversham

On Wednesday 29 th April Senlac St Leonards Rotarians, customers of the Bull Inn, St
Leonards and guests travelled to Faversham in beautiful weather to visit the
Shepherd Neame Brewery for a guided tour of the brewery. And what an interesting
day it was. Our excellent guide, Dean, talked us round the brewery telling us the
history of the brewery and the brewing process as we went. With just four basic
ingredients barley, water, hops and yeast Dean explained how by various
combinations of these ingredients different brews were manufactured. As we went
round a brew of lager was on the go and we were able to see the barley being
mashed. The Brewery produces not only its own brands but also for international
companies under license such as the Thai Singha brand for consumption in the UK.
After the tour there was a tutored beer tasting, three of the Shepherd Neame brews
each with their own distinctive flavours and colours. Of course having expended so
much energy doing the tour we need sustenance to recover; the answer was a
superb ploughmans , a piece of ale cake and a pint of beer!
A really good day and thanks are due to Rotarian Peter Prior who also happens to
be Shepherd Neame’s tenant innkeeper at the Bull in St Leonards.
