Brief Accounts of the RBL Poppy Collection and the Shuffleboard Evening

Autumn Events

The RBL Poppy Collection at Morrisons in Dover

This took place on weekdays from 27th October until 7th November.  As well as club members and Friends we were joined by members of Dover Inner Wheel and the Rotary Club of Dover.  This enabled us to cover all the two-hour time slots over ten days to raise funds for the Royal British Legion which is one of our most popular national charities and is well supported by the public.  We thank everyone who gave donations over the collection period.

Thanks to all our volunteers who did a great job in engaging with the public to raise £3,284.13.  Local RBL Organiser Christine Walton was grateful for our help. We thank Morrisons and their Community Champion, Tracy Turner, for their support.

Shuffleboard Evening on Friday 21st November

This popular annual event took place at St Margeret’s Village Hall and was attended by 80 people who brought their American Suppers and took part in a shuffleboard tournament.  There was also a Grand Raffle which contributed to the funds raised.

Shuffleboard is a board game played in teams.  We had teams of three and nine shuffleboards, with each team completing five games. Scores for each game are recorded and there is a prize for the team with the highest overall score.  This year ‘Acrise Young Farmers’ were the winners; all three team members were young farmers many moons ago.

Shuffleboard is not difficult to play and provides an enjoyable evening as well as raising funds.  Half of the total of £1,200 will go to Rotary’s End Polio Now Campaign and half to local good causes.  The £600 for polio will be trebled by the Bill Gates Foundation and will fund polio vaccinations for 9.000 children.
