The Rotary Club of Thanet was pleased to welcome, Hazel Hedges and Kath Porteous from Westgate and Birchington Inner Wheel, to talk to us about the fundraising they have been doing over the past year to raise money for Blood Kits which can save lives if someone is stabbed or is involved in an accident.
Westgate and Birchington (WB) Inner Wheel have collected some £2,300 for these kits. There are two types of kit: the large kits which are sited in publicly accessible places, cost £510 while the smaller kits, to be kept indoors, cost £144. So far these kits have been installed in schools and churches in Westgate & Birchington area and Inner Wheel have also been working with the local council.
There is 2025 legislation arising from the Manchester arena bombing atrocity which requires anyone holding events with 200 or more attending to have such kits.
Their location can be found on a so-called Blood Map and access and instruction on use will be given through the 999 emergency service in a similar way to the way access is gained to public de-fribulator kits.
WB Inner Wheel have invested lots of time in trying to raise awareness and understanding how all this works. The idea is that local Rotary clubs and other organisations could raise funds to roll out Blood Kits throughout Thanet.
The legislation was past through parliament after The Daniel Baird Foundation was set up in 2017.
Our picture shows club President Ray Johnston with Hazel and Kath.
The link below will take you to the Daniel Baird Foundation Charity website. A sad story indeed but one with hope.
