Thanet Rotary at the Turner Centre margatebookie.com/schoolsday
‘Absolute best time!’. Just one reaction to Thanet Rotary’s sponsored Schools Day at the Turner on 4 October, part of the Bookie Festival.
Jessica Randall, an experienced dramatist and author from the Nick Hornby Foundation, filled pupils from Royal Harbour Academy with energy and inspiration as she delivered her workshop on what goes into writing Gothic fiction. They were then joined by Hartsdown Academy students as renowned screen writer, and now author, Moira Buffini explored the dystopian world created in her book Songlight set far in the future where those who have developed telepathic powers are hunted down by those who have not.
The children were enthusiastic and totally engaged, drawing on their own knowledge of books, television and film. ‘Can I get your book?’ someone asked. And, of course, the answer was Yes. Rotary had ensured that there was a book for everyone which Moira was happy to sign.
It was a pleasure to work with the schools, Andreas Loizou of the Bookie festival and his team, the authors and with the Turner. The event was part of Thanet Rotary’s Literacy Matters! project which, over the last 3 years, working with Margate bookshop has also provided many, many books for Thanet secondary schools.
The picture shows Rotarians David Mander and Jim Nicholson at either end. Andreas in the centre with Moira on his right and Jessica on the left.
