The replica Viking Longship at Cliffsend was sailed from Denmark to Thanet in 1949 (75 years ago) to ‘celebrate’ the 1500th anniversary of the invasion of Britain. Cliffsend parish council made the site available on Sunday 28th July 2024 to recognise this 75th anniversary. A wide range of ‘Viking Crafts’ which included cookery, cloth making, nail making (the metal ones) armour and shields along with mock battles and other Viking activities attracted a large enthusiastic crowd.
The Rotary Club of Thanet along with other Thanet clubs helped with car marshalling for the day as well as promoting SHELTER BOX which is one of the many charities supported by the club. Details regarding Shelter Box can be found at: https://shelterbox.org/
