Scouts and St George 2024
David and Liz Diggens with Jim and Trudy Nicholson were proud to represent The Rotary Club of Thanet at a celebration of Scouting and St George at Dreamland on 22 April 2024.
They were welcomed by Neil McCollum, Chair of Thanet District Scouts Association (TDSA), and his wife and were part of a VIP group including Sir Roger Gale MP and local mayors. The invitation to the event recognised the support which our club has provided for scouting over the years. And, of course, David was Chair of TDSA for some 10 years and continues to maintain strong links with the scouts.
Proud parents filled the arena, not discouraged by the weather which was variable. The celebration was an opportunity for the scouts of all ages to share the highlights of the Scouting year, to parade and present their standards and to review their promises. The promises vary with age and accommodate all faiths and none. Typically:
I promise:
that I will do my best. A promise for themselves. Cubs Scouts are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions.
to follow my [particular faith] to do my duty and uphold our Scout values.. This uses the concept of duty to think and act more widely than just about themselves.
and to The King. Make a positive contribution to society: With this phrase, the Cub Scout is expected to respect the laws of the land and to set a good example.
To help other people and keep to Cub Scout Law. Make a positive contribution to society:
Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and the band of the Margate Boys' and Girls' Brigade paraded around the Scenic Stage and, on the stage, the children went through their various dance routines.
The Thanet Gang Show were also on stage with a message for the children about dealing with any problems they might face, delivered in a St George and the Dragon 'It's behind you' routine that Sarah Thorne theatre would have been proud of. Works every time.

A great evening was had at the Golden Lion Broad Oak when 35 members and friends came out for an evening of 'Bat and Trap' followed by a Bar-b Q

The Rotary Club of Thanet has raised £636.50 through Graham Channon who was last year’s Master at Arms. At Grahams discretion this amount was donated to The MS Society, a charity close to his and our members hearts.
