Covid

As well as the many deaths and much suffering, Covid has raised many societal issues which have demanded a response.

Rotary club of Thanet were not able to meet at the Royal Temple Yacht Club in Ramsgate on their usual Mondays when  restrictions started to be applied. Members donated some of the money they would have spent on dinner towards a Covid support fund to help those charities and other organisations who were responding to the challenge.

The club also drew down its own charitable funds to help the community.

Foodbanks

We donated £3,250 and over £200 in food to Thanet Food Link (Margate), £2,250 to the Salvation Army (Ramsgate) plus £1,000 to the Gap project in Broadstairs to purchase essential supplies in support of those in need.We also gave £200 to help the Thanet Churches Open Xmas initiative.  A further £500 went to support the ongoing work of the Ramsgate branch of the Salvation Army arising from Covid.

Pilgrims Hospice

We gave £1,000 to the hospice whose fund raising had been badly affected by the crisis.

Domestic abuse

A steep rise in cases of reported domestic abuse was one of the sad features of lockdown and  we gave £2,500 to the Oasis domestic abuse service.

Face masks and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

£250 went to Thanet Facemasks, a group of volunteer sewers who came together to produce masks for emergency workers in Thanet. Some of our members also donated materials for the cause. Alison, caught in the picture above, was the first person to join the group and produced over 1,000 masks on her own, as well as coordinating the efforts of others in Westgate. A local hero.

And we contributed £500 to the costs incurred by Kent Volunteers Community Transport Service in providing PPE for volunteer drivers and their clients attending hospital appointments.

Homelessness

There were concerns among some charities helping to deliver the government's 'Everyone In' initiative , which aimed to get rough sleepers off the streets, that the ending of furlough support and the lifting of restrictions on evictions for payment arrears could cause a significant rise in the numbers coming to them for support. We are long standing supporters of Porchlight and we gave them a further £1000 to help with their work.Isolation

£250 to Age UK to support the work of their carers responding to needs of the elderly who were feeling isolated during the pandemic.

Mary's Meals

Our Club learned of the inspiring work of the the charity Mary's Meals (www.marysmeals.org.uk) which aims to give one good meal every school day to some of the world's poorest children. They were  feeding over 1.8 million children.
For Mary's Meals it is important not only to meet the needs of the hungry child, but also that they attract children to the classroom where they can gain a basic education. Instead of working or begging for food, children can attend class knowing that the promise of a meal each day will enable them to concentrate and look to a future where they can be free of poverty and reliance on aid.
Mary's Meals have a vision that invites all of us to offer our money, goods, skills, time or prayer to help those suffering extreme poverty in the world's poorest communities. Incredibly, it costs no more than £15.90  to feed a child for a whole school year and Thanet Rotary Club donated £1,590 which would feed 100 children. The money came from members' donations reflecting money saved over the Covid period.
Anyone interested in hearing more about the work of Mary' Meals, can  contact annette.davies@marysmeals.org.
