The Rotary Club of Thanet recently sent 6 year 10 students from Charles Dickens School to a RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Weekend)
Lauren Roden, the school Assistant Headteacher (Personal Development) made the following comments:
The pupils had such an amazing time on the RYLA weekend. They were buzzing as they were telling me all about and are so grateful for the opportunity.
Thanks again for providing this for them; it really means a lot.
I have a few comments from George and Tonie that I thought would be nice to share:
April 2026
Hello
We are all pupils who took part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award weekend, and we wanted to write to personally say “thank you” for funding and supporting such an incredible opportunity.
We had an amazing weekend and are all extremely grateful to have been able to take part. We learned so much about leadership, teamwork and ourselves, and we will take these lessons forward with us.
A huge thank you as well to all the volunteers who gave up their time to lead the activities, support us and put up with our enthusiasm throughout the weekend!
We would love to stay involved with Rotary in the future and would be very happy to help at any events or activities where we can.
Thank you again for making this experience possible.
Kind regards
Excellent, George, Georgia, Keira, Rose and Tonie

George:
When I was invited to an exceptional and magnificent opportunity by our local Rotary, I jumped to apply. When the time came, me and some fellows travelled to a place called the Bowles centre, which had a width of teamwork and leadership exercises and experiences to do. To begin we learned each other’s names, then split into groups and played in semi competitive, but mostly just enjoyable, games (which we all as a group won). Each of us had a turn to lead a group in an activity, and with every activity we learnt a different aspect of leadership and teamwork. Overall, it was an amazing time, and we are so grateful to the wonderful people who gave us this chance!
Tonie:
This weekend was such a great experience. We had loads of activities, from crawling through tunnels to walking on ropes high up in the air, and even went tobogganing with staff racing us down the slope. At the start it was pretty awkward since no one knew each other, but by the end we’d built so much trust guiding each other through blind obstacle courses and helping each other across the high ropes. Along the way, we also discovered our different leadership styles
