Michele first spoke to Seaford Rotary via Zoom on 26th May 2021 when she spoke about how CTAS was set up and the projects being taken forward to provide and store clean water, hot lunches (tiffin) and educational equipment for schools (See Newsmonger June 2021) in Nepal. Prior to the Covid pandemic Michele travelled to Nepal three or four times a year to see progress with CTAS projects, but the pandemic prevented such visits. Her last visit was in October 2022.
The 15,000 litres water tank at Mahendra secondary school in Lahachok is complete enabling the school to store clean water. CTAS also contributed to the provision of security netting at the school.
The project completion was overseen by the CTAS Treasurer and Project Manager Som Bahadur Nepali whose sister and brother were swept away and drowned back in the early 1990’s trying to collect water from the river which led to the charity being set up. He is the only remaining child from that family.
At Damsaede school, accessed by a new suspension bridge across the Pokhara valley and a 35—45-minute trek, a landslide recently occurred above the school, with the resulting slide depositing debris and earth adjacent to the school building. Although no structural damage was caused to the school building, the debris and earth resting against the outer walls has resulted in damp within the classrooms. CTAS proposes a project to provide a retaining wall and security netting to prevent further damage should another landslide occur.
Michele illustrated the condition of the toilets and the single tap for handwashing at Youwabarsha school and indicated that CTAS wishes to facilitate the provision of a new toilet block and a sink with four taps.
Seaford Rotary have agreed to provide a contribution to both these projects and following her talk Michele was presented with a cheque for the contribution to CTAS.
