Youth Services Continues SASBAH Support
For several years Seaford Rotaryhas supported the Eastbourne AM Club which organises a “breakaway “weekend away for disabled young people, and some older ones, for the Sussex Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SASBAH).
The aim of the weekend which runs from Friday until Sunday is to give participants a fun time with lots of different activities, whilst at the same time enabling parents and carers to have a short break from their ongoing responsibilities.
The weekend is held at Lodge Hill, a specialist centre near Pulborough, and Jim and Joyce Anderson went along this year to support the varied activities. And varied does mean varied. The first time Jim visited many of the participants were zipping round at high speed in go-carts and, although that wasn’t available this year the two most popular outdoor activities were the toboggan run down a steep slope and the zip wire.
Although it had rained heavily overnight, and the toboggan run was very wet, there was no shortage of volunteers, and even the “moans” when they had to pull the sledge back up the slope to the start were good hearted.
While this was going on, others were enjoying cycling in the area normally available for car parking while a third group were inside in the dry with a number of small rodents which were let out of their cages one by one. The chinchilla was certainly more popular than the white rat and many of the young people were able to take home a photograph of themselves with the chinchilla sitting on their head.
Whilst it is a matter of concern that those pictures of Jim and Joyce have been “lost” fortunately, the one taken with Nicole, one of the Seaford participants has survived.
But it's not just the daylight hours which are full as the evening programme with a disco took over, and with one of the young people celebrating a birthday, it was confidently predicted that everyone would amazingly find they were not tired after all.
And there were still all the Sunday activities to come. In summary, another very successful “breakaway” of which it was a privilege to be a part.

more Entries were received in two age groups, Junior — 7 to 10 years old and Intermediate — 11 to 13 years old, but no entries for the Senior category — 14 to 17 years old. To the surprise of the judges, there were also three under age entries.
