Early in the morning Rotarians Dave Argent and Mark Forrester set up roadblocks to close Church Street so that the French stallholders could set up their stalls.
It appeared at times that the pandemic restrictions had just been lifted as there were long queues at several stalls, and a throng of inquisitive shoppers meandering between stalls.
With croissants and baguettes being baked on the street, the smell of freshly cooked bread wafted pleasantly up Church Street, no doubt one reason for the long queue at that stall. French cheese, olives, patisseries were all attracting a steady stream of customers.
The number of stalls was however reduced from that before the pandemic struck. Noted absences were stalls selling onions and smoked garlic, soaps from Marseilles, and the colourful cloths from Provence, not forgetting the stall purveying French music.
Thankfully the overcast sky refrained from spoiling the day with any precipitation, and both stall holders and their customers left happy with their days work and shopping before the road closure was lifted, and normal service was resumed in Church Street.
