Golfers club together to support British Heart Foundation
On Friday 26th August 2022, 72 keen golfers took part in Leatherhead Rotary Club's 30th Annual Charity Golf Day at Effingham Golf Club in aid of the British Heart Foundation.
After ‘teeing off’ with a sandwich lunch, the eighteen teams of four headed out on to the course for a full 18-hole round of golf, returning to the clubhouse around five hours later for a two-course supper and the presentation of prizes. After a very closely fought competition, The Early Risers, comprising Nigel Matthews, Kevin Mann, Peter Morris and Chris Greenaway, emerged triumphant at the top of the leaderboard for the third year running with a Stableford score of 138 points, narrowly beating Sam & Co and The Scramblers into second and third place, with scores of 133 and 132 respectively.
The John Lawrence Memorial Shield for the highest individual score of the day was awarded to Grant Samuel from TWM Solicitors, with a very impressive score of 49 points, and a special prize of a bottle of champagne was also presented to Bent Petersen from The Scramblers, who scored the first ever hole-in-one in the competition’s 30-year history!
Following on from the golf competition presentations, Rotarian Andrew Emmett auctioned off two rounds of golf for four people, at Effingham Golf Club and the RAC Golf Club, which, together with various other fundraising activities throughout the day, including a tombola and £50 note raffle, helped to raise almost £3,500 for the British Heart Foundation, the club’s main charity for the current Rotary year.
Leatherhead Rotary Club would like to thank everyone who so generously supported this year's event, by way of team entries and donation of tombola and auction prizes, together with Churchill Retirement Living for sponsoring the ‘nearest the pin’ and ‘longest drive’ competitions, and Kall Kwik in Leatherhead for very kindly printing the programmes for the day.
Rotary Club President and Golf Day organiser, Gary Zabel, said, “Effingham Golf course was in perfect condition and conducive to some very high scoring from our 72 entrants who were extremely generous and helped us raise almost £3,500 for the British Heart Foundation, our charity of the year. We are trying to help them to raise the profile of vascular dementia which is not as well-known as Alzheimer’s Disease, but can cause just as much suffering.”, adding, “This was the 30th year we have run this golf event and during that time we’ve raised well over £100,000 for a wide range of charities.”
The club’s next fundraising event will be a special Bridge Masterclass with international bridge player and Times bridge columnist, Andrew Robson OBE, on Wednesday 2nd November. For further information or to book a table, please visit www.leatherheadrotary.org.uk or phone 01372 377831.
Other fundraising events being organised by the club in aid of the British Heart Foundation include a Big Band Concert at Leatherhead Theatre and a 10k Run across Headley Heath, both in Spring 2023.
Leatherhead Rotary Club meets at 7pm most Wednesday evenings at the Police Federation Headquarters in Highbury Drive, Leatherhead.
