World Polio Day, 24th October

Purple crocus corm planting to commemorate the vaccination of children against polio and symbolize the application of a purple dye to a finger to show that they have been treated.

Crocus Planters

24th October is World Polio Day.  The Rotary Club of Brighton donates funds every year to Rotary International's PolioPlus charity.  You can help us to do this by donating just £2 to the Rotary Club of Brighton Charitable Trust.

When children are vaccinated, a purple dye is painted on one of their fingers to show that they have been treated (kids love the sugar lumps on which the vaccine is administered and often come back for more!).  To commemorate and publicize this on World Polio Day, Rotary clubs all over the UK have planted purple crocus corms which will flower next Spring.  The Rotary Club of Brighton and friends have done this in Preston Park and by the Rotary Welcome to Brighton & Hove sign on the A23.
