Today Steve Collins from the Goldsmith's Company assay Office gave us a most amazing, polished, amusing, informative and interesting talk on the 1,250 year history of Hallmarks. The company was one of the first livery companies in London and the practise of Hallmarking began in the 1300's and gave us sayings such as 'all that glitters is not gold', 'coming up to scratch', 'the acid test', 'sterling silver ' and 'half penny'.
