Troon Rotary Club was delighted to award Marr College Allotment £200.00 from the TRCS (Troon Rotary Community Support) fund this month. Jill Scott is pictured with Rotarian Jyl Ashton Cunningham. Pupils were hard at work on the Fullarton Woods allotment, dealing with all the jobs that spring brings annually. In the absence of the Big Cheque normally used for photos, cup cakes were brought for the students which were deemed a welcome treat. Ms Scott did point out that the students follow a very healthy diet during their six week tenure at the allotment and later in the year, use their own produce to prepare meals cooked on site. They grow all kinds of wonderful things, including rhubarb, strawberries, courgettes, pumpkins, carrots and lots of fragrant herbs.
Marr is always grateful to receive donations of healthy edible plants and flowers that can be planted in their substantial plot, where they also have a polytunnel to bring on tomatoes and young plants. The group is on the allotment on Tuesday mornings (after the Easter holidays) and they are to the left of the gate, where the green polytunnels can be spotted.
Marr College have kindly agreed to assist Troon Rotary Club with one of their 70th Anniversary projects, which is the greening of a piece of land between the municipal golf course and Troon Cemetery, where a large proportion of the 70 trees planned for planting this year will be placed by members of the Club and Marr students. Troon Rotary would be delighted to accept donations of well established trees, such as Apple, Pear, Plum, Rowan, Fir and Birch, which are all trees indigenous to the area and which will attract birds and bees. Please visit Troon Rotary on Facebook and message us if you are able to help!
